Richland/Lexington Disabilities and Special Needs
Board

How to Begin:
First, call the
Richland/Lexington Disabilities & Special Needs Board at
(803) 252-5179.
- You will be linked to an Intake Service Coordinator who is a guide
for entering the disabilities service system, a contact person and advocate. The
Intake Service Coordinator will be your guide.
- The Intake Service Coordinator will help determine if your family
is eligible for services. Your service coordinator will gather important information
needed for the eligibility process. Information includes: medical information,
social information, psychological information, and other information as deemed
necessary. Your service coordinator will use this information to help determine
which services will be most practical for your family and how they can be provided.
- If your family is eligible for services, the service coordinator
will arrange the specialized services you need.
- The service coordinator may refer your family to other community
agencies which offer educational services, mental health services or social services.
- The service coordinator may also refer you to community resources
which offer practical knowledge, advocacy or support groups to families of people with
disabilities.
- If your family is not eligible for services, the service
coordinator will refer you to other resources in the Greater Columbia area.
- Children ages 0-3 should
contact BabyNet, South Carolina's referral
source for children with special needs. You can contact the Richland/Lexington
Disabilities and Special Needs Board for information about BabyNet. We will answer
any questions that you have and make your referral for you.
